Born and raised in South Jamaica, Queens and the son of two African-American parents, Dane Fenner always had a passion for technology. As a child, Dane’s mother used to take him to the local flea market, where he’d pick up spare parts for computers; at that time, they didn’t have money to buy a personal computer (mid-90s). Self-taught, Dane learned how to build computers by reverse engineering the only home computer that they had in the house (that was off-limits).
From there, he developed a passion for technology and processes. Despite being an active person who enjoys fitness, Dane did not have an ambition for sports or activities other than working with computers. He knew from a young age that he wanted to work in the technology field.
Strongly influenced by his oldest sister, Dane had always set high goals for himself. He saw his sister as his role model, who set the bar and standard. She chose electrical engineering, while Dane embarked on his journey in higher education, majoring in both IT and computer technology. He enrolled in North Carolina Agricultural and Technology State University (NCAT), a highly vetted HBCU, in the early 2000s. He completed two degrees in four years.
A decade later, Dane established himself as a high-functioning cybersecurity manager and team leader who has worked with companies like JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley, BNY Mellon, Univision, CareFirst, and Northwell Health.
Learning responsibility and consistency from his mother and how to “dream big” and being eager to learn from his father, Dane has carried those characteristics with him into adulthood. In his senior year of college, Dane got his hands on a plethora of finance and wealth books, where he learned how to invest. This triggered his interest in real estate.
Understanding that the best option is to put his extra money into real estate, Dane purchased his first home in 2012 as a primary investment. Years later, he purchased his second property. Consequently, Dane learned how to purchase homes with little out-of-pocket money by leveraging 401K, business loans, and group economics–leading to his asset management company, Fenner Legacy Holdings, being established.
